A Proud Icon of Liberty and Freedom
Located on a 12 acre island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
Today the statue of Liberty has become the icon that represents America in the hearts and minds of many tourists. It is also a quintessential symbol of freedom and liberation from oppression and represents all things good about the United States. It is said that the statue’s location in New York Harbor was chosen so that it would serve as a sign of welcome to all those entering the Land of the free- USA, such as tourists, immigrants and returning American expatriates.
The Statue of Liberty’s classical appearance is derived from Libertas, ancient Rome’s goddess of freedom from slavery, oppression, and tyranny. Her raised right foot is on the move. This symbol of Liberty and Freedom is not standing still or at attention in the harbor, she is moving forward, as her left foot tramples broken shackles at her feet, in symbolism of the United States’s wish to be free from oppression and tyranny. The seven spikes on the crown represent the Seven Seas and seven continents. Her torch signifies enlightenment. The tablet in her hand represents knowledge and shows the date of the nation’s birth, July 4, 1776.
Visitors arrive by ferry onto Liberty island by traveling across New York City Harbor. They are usually allowed to climb the statue from the inside, using the narrow circular stairs that only allows visitors walk in a single file. Most visitors climb right up to the crown of the statue from where they have an inspiring as well as a breathtaking view of New York City across the Harbor.
Most New York hotels offer packages to their guests to visit the Statue of Liberty. BE warned though visitors regularly have to stand in queues for up to three hours to climb inside the statue. Hotels in New York located close to the Harbor area are the best option if you wish to visit the statue, the area is close to downtown New York that offers good shopping opportunities.
