What is the proper title and style of a great-grandchild of a British Sovereign?
From a patriIinear line, I mean.
They used to be called PrincesPrincesses as well, but with a style HH instead of HRH. A quick search showed me that now they are styled either Lords or Ladies (e.g. the children of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent) or The Lord/Lady (e.g. the children of Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester). The eldest son of course takes the auxiliary title of his father.
Was the British Law changed, or the great-granchildren are still Prince/Princess and being styled as Lords/Ladies, as a way to downsize the number of royals?
In the male line, all great grand daughters of a sovereign are styled Lady ‘Forename’ Windsor.
Male line great grandsons who are the eldest (or only) son of a peerage holder are able to use the subsiduary title. The eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales is entitled to HRH Prince, even if his father does not have a peerage title in his own right. All other sons are Lords ‘Forename’ Windsor’. (Mountbatten Windsor wil be used by the non royal descendants of The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in the male line)
When the grandfather of a Lord or Lady becomes king, then the said Lords and Ladies are automatically elevated to HRH Prince or Princess without the need for Letters Patent being issued.
They are not royal until they hold the HRH, but may be considered as members of the official royal family using the soveriegns perogative.
