Morgan Dollars – Everything You Need to Know About Them

What are they?

Named after their designer – George Morgan – Morgan Dollars are a group of special coins produced by The Mint on and off between 1878 and 1921.  Unlike most other coins, Morgan Dollars were not created to be circulated.  Instead, they were used to guarantee the silver market.  And, in some cases, they were used for Oriental trading.  That makes them some of the rarest coins you can find anywhere!  Consider them to be some of the most precious of the precious metals.

So, what do they look like?

One side of the coin features the profile of a woman and the words “E Pluribus Unim” (or, “out of many, one” in Latin), while the other side depicts an eagle with its wings outstretched.

But they aren’t just rare; they are also made with quality ingredients.  Morgan Dollars are made out of silver.  In fact, they have roughly the same percentage of silver as sterling silver.

Why are they such a good investment?

Unlike gold bullion, Morgan Dollars are made valuable by their rarity.   In fact, they are some of the rarest coins that the United States has ever created!  You can’t just walk up to any coin dealer and buy them.  Since Morgan Dollars were only produced on an intermittent basis, there are only a few of them to go around.  They don’t just offer a high silver percentage; they also offer a historic momento.

When you buy one, you don’t have to simply cross your fingers and hope that you’ve made a wise investment – like you do with some other precious metals.  Instead, with something as rare as a Morgan Dollar, you know you are getting something that other collectors find fascinating – which makes your investment worth top dollar.

If you are really lucky, you will be able to find a Morgan Dollar that was printed with errors.  These coins are even more rare than the Morgan Dollars that were made correctly – but they are floating around out there.  Some, for example, were double struck – meaning that they have two images on each side, instead of just one.  If you can find a Morgan Dollar with an error on it, your coin value will go up even more!
