High-purity benzoic acid (C6H5COOH; delta H rxn for combustion = -3227 kJ/mol) is used as a standard for calibrating bomb caloritmeters. A 1.221-g sample burns in a calorimeter (heat capacity = 1365 J/degrees C) that contains exactly 1.160 kg of water. What temperature change is observed?

0.0100 mol x 3227 kJ/mol = 32.27 kJ

32270 = 6218 x dC
dC = +5.19 deg C
The sign (-3227 kJ/mol) is negative and simply tells you that the reaction gives off energy (exothermic). The absolute value (3227 J/mol) is used and the sign then tells you if the temperature increased or decreased.
