What is the benefit of an American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card?
I just received a very good offer from AMEX for their Premier Rewards Gold Card, and I’m tempted to get it, but I want to know what the benefits are of having this card. By benefits, I mean other than the offer they are giving me and the points I build. With no APR and a monthly payoff of my balance, will this card do wonders for my credit?
Also, how many places are excepting American Express nowadays?

The only difference between the Premier Rewards and the standard Gold are the points multipliers and the higher annual fee. If you are asking in a more general sense, just look it up on their web page. It is very informative. The points don’t convert very well to cash, expect only 0.5% cash or 0.7% on Amazon. They do convert fairly well to airline miles and hotel points, and you can get 1% back in gift cards from many of their partner retailers. The 2X and 3X categories will, of course, provide you with that much more per dollar spent. ($1000 on airfare will earn 3000 points, worth a $15 statement credit or $30 B&N gift certificate. $1000 on Hostess Cupcakes will earn 1000 points, worth a $5 statement credit or $10 B&N gift certificate.)
I don’t travel much and I’m a cheapskate, so I have the Zync. It has the same purchase protection, extended warranty, and many of the travel benefits of the Gold for a fraction of the cost. Its points do not transfer to frequent flyer or hotel programs, though, and it lacks some of the perks of the higher tier cards. It won’t do wonders for your credit, but moving most of your spending to a charge card will greatly reduce your revolving utilization. Even if you pay a credit card in full every month, you can show a high utilization; that won’t happen with a charge card. On the other hand, if you cannot pay your entire balance every month you immediately go into default; there are even reports that American Express will report you as 30 days late after only 5 days. If you have a sudden cashflow problem, you may have to transfer your AmEx balance to a credit card just to keep everything current.
AmEx is accepted almost everywhere I shop online and in the US. The Gold Card’s target demographic is fairly affluent, and shops at higher-end merchants that are more likely to accept the card. AmEx seems to have slightly higher acceptance than Discover, but that is just my own experience. Discover might have better acceptance abroad because of its network-sharing agreements with JCB, China UnionPay, and others. It goes without saying Visa and MasterCard are still the king and queen of card acceptance.
