A brief about art stretcher bars
An artist’s work doesn’t just stop with the artwork. The presentation of the artwork is also a key aspect of the artist’s work. This is where the stretcher bar comes into picture. In fact, not only for presentation, but these bars are also used for support during painting or during the course of the artwork. Needless to say, these stretcher bars are rightfully called art stretcher bars !
How to use the art stretcher bars?
The stretcher bars are usually made of wood. In order to create a stretcher frame for an artwork, one would require four such bars made up of wood. These four bars are placed adjacently to each other to form a rectangular or square frame (depending on the size of the canvas). The bars aren’t nailed down or fixed permanently. Since the bars are made up of wood, increase or decrease of moisture levels will result in the expansion and contraction of the wood. Therefore, fixing the bars permanently isn’t a good idea and may lead to the contortion of bars in the middle or slag in them or they might as well crack or break. Instead one should use intermittent butt or miter joints, which allow for the movement of the wood. The fixing of the bars with the help of joints may not be a cakewalk and one shouldn’t be shy in taking up the assistance of a skilled person for the job.
Once the frame is constructed, it’s the turn of the canvas. The canvas needs to be placed on the frames such that a part of it (the border) is folded back and this part is tacked or stapled or pinned to the bars. This may sound simple, but the placement of canvas is not an easy job. One has to look at all the sides of the canvas and must ensure no wrinkle, or slag or tear is resulted on any part of the canvas while placing it on the frame. Furthermore, the tacks and stapling too needs to be done tactfully so as to not put in too much of tension on the canvas.
